Planning using GTD - What works for me - Episode 62
Saturday Mar 26, 2022
Saturday Mar 26, 2022
Yes, what planning technique works for me, is the topic of this episode.
We start with why plan at all, the various views around planning and planning of what ? I share why I like planning and then a quick introduction on how planning is important. Yes, it need not be boring. And planning is not about making you do more things!
I introduce you to the Getting Things Done methodology, popularly called GTD. I explain how I use GTD in my day to day life and how it helps me. This episode is meant to be a pointer to this technique so that you can find out more from the GTD book by David Allen or podcasts or videos on this topic. It is a very interesting journey to which I am happy to invite you. Listen on..
What the New Indian Woman podcast is about
As you may already be aware, this podcast has 2 focus areas. One, We examine the challenges faced by today's Indian woman and propose ACTIONABLE strategies in the Indian context, on a wide variety of topics - right from identifying their passion to better productivity and parenting. Second, we meet women who chose to aspire or have a dream beyond their defined roles and facilitate sharing of what worked and what didn’t, for them. Today's episode falls in the first category.
And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
We start the episode probing into why plan at all. If you believe planning is not for you, then you may be a bit disappointed to know you are already planning your day to day life, though you may actually be thinking you are not!
I am of the view that it is very important to plan what we want/have to do, when and how. Why ? It gives us a lot of options and it makes us more aligned to seeing challenges as opportunities - the one most common thing shared by all guests on this podcast. Most importantly, planning allows us to be intentional with time.
We get into why planning is not the same as having to do lists. In our earlier episodes, we have focussed on Goal setting, Yearly, Monthly and Quarterly Planning, about Crafting Ideal Day and even about Planners.
How to plan ? This is where I get into a short story of coming across a very useful article by David Allen and later reading the book Getting Things Done.
I focus on explaining the gist of how I apply GTD in my life - of course, this is not a comprehensive way of using GTD. The purpose of this episode is to introduce you to the topic of GTD.
The fundamental principle being "The mind is for having ideas, not holding them".
We look at the Capture, Clarify, Organize, Engage and Review components and what needs to be done in each stage and how I do it. We also look at the famous 2 minute rule.
We look at the various lists - SomeDay Maybe, Waiting For, Projects and the quintessential Next Action Lists based on contexts, apart from the Calendar. I explain how I use this both in the home and work context.
GTD is not just about these lists alone - it is a principle which starts with these. And there are so many more principles to examine. The key is how you understand and apply this to your life.
Hope you enjoy this episode. I welcome you to read up more on GTD and start experiencing the benefits. Please write to me at krishna@thenewindianwoman.com or reach out to our social media pages to share your views on this episode.

Prof. Jayanthasri - for Women in their 30s to 40s - Episode 58
Saturday Jan 22, 2022

In Part 1, i.e. episode 57, we examined questions pertaining to women in their 20s to 30s.

We talk a lot about parenting and how a woman's role in parenting is a choice and how she should look it at responsibly. We move on to talking about time, using time especially and she shares 2 important tips to find more time in the 24 hours that we all have.
So, listen on..
Today's episode falls in the second category.
And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
We start with the topic of being busy and using "busyness" as an excuse for just about surviving, trying to figure out all the important decisions to be made at this stage in life. Dr. Jayanthasri talks about how parenting is a responsibility where there is no proxy parenting, no part time parenting, no perfect parenting either. There is no charity about taking care of one's own child, there need not be a sense of sacrifice, because it is a choice.
The points covered include the importance of giving room for a child's independence despite all the arrogance and seemingly audacious behaviour from the child, due to the challenges of age. At the same time, she cautions us not to try to become your child's friend. She highlights the importance of listening to the child, even if you are not entertaining the same idea. She also explains the danger of us not taking this important responsibility seriously.
She says the sense of parenting cannot be changed with time, while the expressions change with time, over generations. She then explains to us about intuition and instinct and how parenting includes both.
Prof. Jayanthasri then goes on to talk about this notion of sacrificing for one's children and she says people who talk about sacrifice are people who cannot come out of a sense of selfpity. A mother will be a better mother if she stops talking about sacrifice, because any way she is wired that way.
She then goes on to explain her concept of time - not about creating or managing time, but using time, valuing time. And then she shares 2 tips for making best use of one's time.
She then narrates an incident in her life and how she should have forgotten and forgiven her son for something he had said many years ago, but she is unable to. And how she had to be clear on what to focus upon.
She shares her philosophy about using time very carefully, a philosophy that has not changed in the last 20 years!
Don’t' you want to know it ?
I wish I had the opportunity to listen to her talks when I was in this life stage! But then, I realize there are learnings for me that I can apply to my life, now! So, do give this episode a listen.

What's in this episode:
In this episode also, there are 3 questions I focus on, with both the guests, as relevant. What are the top 3 things they do to manage work and home well as a woman, their top productivity tip and about child care options.
Our guest who is a lecturer in an engineering college, talks about the need to be systematic and well organized. Later we delve into the details of what this means, from a day to day perspective. She talks about the importance of spending time with the family and seeking their support. She also goes into how simple and small steps can make a huge difference in our quality of daily life.
Her top productivity tip is not any specific tool - but about the mind. And how to change your guilt feeling about not spending enough time with the family.
She shares how the demands of the time only increase when the children grow older. She then goes on to talk about the importance of not being in separate worlds!
We discuss the child care options or the lack of them and here she shares the struggles she went through and what worked for her and how she had to adapt continuously to cater to the child care situation.
She talks about the importance of understanding if the workplace environment is hostile, telling us there are lot of opportunities if one is intelligent and competent enough.
She goes on to share more details of the kind of challenges she went through and how she had to take professional help. She says the advice that helped her the most is about the need to accept that one cannot change others.
She stresses the importance of self-care, open communication and the need to adapt and accept things with more maturity. Plus, identifying where one needs help and then asking for the same.
Then, we move on to someone who is working in a senior position in IT with a son in college. To the same questions, her response is about support system, importance of nurturing ourselves and to keep learning always. Her productivity tip is again very different and it is all around the awareness of what works best for oneself.
On child care, she shares how it is important to work towards building a support system. I cannot agree more when she says, it will not come and sit in your life.
It was interesting to also hear about their take on the guilty feeling that moms who are pursuing careers often go through.
These discussions are intended to let us understand and appreciate these perspectives. Plus, these should be prompts for us to examine our own challenges.

What's in this episode:
There are 3 questions I focus on, in this episode, with all the 3 guests, as relevant. What are the top 3 things they do to manage work and home well as a woman, their top productivity tip and about child care options.
Ramya talks about how we try to create this perfect wife or daughter in law image which is not sustainable and then she talks about what is the most effective way to do the balancing. And she indeed has a very different productivity tip.
Then we meet someone who has a toddler and the challenges only increase and are of a different order. She talks about her priority of spending quality time with her toddler and that influencing everything in her day. We see her stretching her hours to make sure she is able to get time with her toddler. Her top productivity tip is also influenced by this perspective. And then, we focus on child care options available and the challenges around that and how money doesn’t seem to help matters. There is some wishful thinking also here. We also talk about her expectation from other members of the family. I wonder what would that be for you ?
We proceed with the same questions with someone who has slightly older children, of early school going age. She shares about her journey and how she had to decide to switch off from work when she spends time with her kids. She shares her reflection on how she and her husband had to become aware of, discuss and let go of something that was affecting them a lot. She also shares her productivity tip and what she struggles with. The child care option that she engaged in and the challenges therein are also interesting to note.
These discussions are intended to let us understand and appreciate these perspectives. Plus, these should be prompts for us to examine our own challenges.
