Second, We meet women who chose to aspire or have a dream beyond their defined roles and facilitates sharing of what worked and what didn’t, for them. Today's episode falls in the second category.
And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
We ended the previous episode with the question on making time and balancing this passion with her career demands , considering the seniority of her role. And this is what we dive into, in this episode.
She starts sharing, how after her break, when she resumed her office, people continued to ask for baking classes and how she decided to make time for this. She recalls how this aspect has been there right from her childhood, balancing multiple things. She talks about the importance of planning and then, executing as per plan. She then got hooked on to baking and planned to bake almost every day. She tells how she started sharing the loaves she baked with friends and family and especially older people who may have reservations about bread.
She goes on to share about the bad days and how the family supports her. We then discuss about how this family support evolves over a period of time and what is crucial is that one starts, puts in the effort, for the family to start supporting. She then goes on to talk about a baking course she did in Germany and how baking becomes meditative when you use your hands with natural elements and see how the bare essentials gradually evolve into a finished product right in front of you. She shares how baking teaches you discipline!
She talks about her dreams - to increase awareness about the simplicity of baking bread, about creating short videos on healthy fast food targeting young students, about reaching out to deprived and marginalized women and children to create employment opportunities through baking. She even shares her personal goals, of leaving her job in a few years(and not waiting till retirement) and starting a baking school or academy with short term and long term courses for women and she is even visualizing a chain of cafes where you could place orders for custom breads and when you come to collect them, you could choose to spend some time with music or participate in book and poetry reading sessions!
It is truly wonderful and her energy is so infectious, you don’t want to miss listening to the entire episode!

Saturday Mar 26, 2022

It is a very interesting journey to which I am happy to invite you. Listen on..
What the New Indian Woman podcast is about
As you may already be aware, this podcast has 2 focus areas. Second, we meet women who chose to aspire or have a dream beyond their defined roles and facilitate sharing of what worked and what didn’t, for them. Today's episode falls in the first category.
And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
We start the episode probing into why plan at all. If you believe planning is not for you, then you may be a bit disappointed to know you are already planning your day to day life, though you may actually be thinking you are not!
I am of the view that it is very important to plan what we want/have to do, when and how. Why ? It gives us a lot of options and it makes us more aligned to seeing challenges as opportunities - the one most common thing shared by all guests on this podcast. Most importantly, planning allows us to be intentional with time.
We get into why planning is not the same as having to do lists. In our earlier episodes, we have focussed on Goal setting, Yearly, Monthly and Quarterly Planning, about Crafting Ideal Day and even about Planners.
How to plan ? This is where I get into a short story of coming across a very useful article by David Allen and later reading the book Getting Things Done.
I focus on explaining the gist of how I apply GTD in my life - of course, this is not a comprehensive way of using GTD. The purpose of this episode is to introduce you to the topic of GTD.
The fundamental principle being "The mind is for having ideas, not holding them".
We look at the Capture, Clarify, Organize, Engage and Review components and what needs to be done in each stage and how I do it. We also look at the famous 2 minute rule.
We look at the various lists - SomeDay Maybe, Waiting For, Projects and the quintessential Next Action Lists based on contexts, apart from the Calendar. I explain how I use this both in the home and work context.
GTD is not just about these lists alone - it is a principle which starts with these. And there are so many more principles to examine. The key is how you understand and apply this to your life.
Hope you enjoy this episode. I welcome you to read up more on GTD and start experiencing the benefits. Please write to me at krishna@thenewindianwoman.com or reach out to our social media pages to share your views on this episode.

Are there gender based roles at home ? - Episode 61
Saturday Mar 12, 2022
Saturday Mar 12, 2022
In this episode, we explore how our day to day activities are influenced by our gender. Not at workplace, but in our own homes. Broadly we may be aware of what is the primary role each family member is playing in the house. Many fall into the area of shared responsibilities. But still, are there things you do in your house only because you are a woman ?
You may wonder why this question should be examined. It is very easy to talk about equality at workplace, equality everywhere. But what about our own families ? Are you aware if gender influences what you do ? We may all be aware of the undue load of invisible work on the woman - managing home and a job, taking care of the children or elderly and what not. Quite often, we may think we have distributed the responsibilities in our own homes and it is a fair game. But, is it ?
I speak to women across various age groups and profiles probing a few questions - whether there is a gender based distribution of work at home ? What is the one thing they would want out of their plate, if they had an option - the one thing that is on them because of being a woman ? What is it they expect from their family or extended family members in terms of better understanding the additional responsibilities carried out as a woman ?
At the end of this episode, you may want to ask some of these questions to yourself. Why ?

And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
Same questions, posed to women of different age groups, profiles and life stages. It is interesting to see some things common, affecting every woman. It is also interesting to see how perspectives differ and sometimes, how the seemingly smallest of things can be such a big bother for them.
One important common observation for me was about how this question was new for all of them - most of them started stating there are no gender based roles, yes, in their own ways. But when probed further. One could make out they were shouldering additional home maintenance responsibilities just because they are women. Sometime there was almost a denial, stating what is done is based on who is skilled at what. And sometimes, there was just plain acceptance, resigning to the fact this is how it is going to be.
It would be very interesting to ask these questions to yourself and openly, without any bias or any attempts to defend, examine your feelings towards this. You may even want to examine a list of what all you do. You may think there is no point in examining this, but do remember, there are or will be children around you, who will imbibe this and accept this as the default. So, you examining these questions and talking about it, as always, would be a good starting point.
There is an interesting article on this topic, albeit in the western contex.t I am not sure of the solution proposed in this context, but I feel it is a good read. This is about a lady who came up with a Shit I do excel and realized it is huge, she came up with this when she felt there was a huge amount of invisible work done by her - https://www.fastcompany.com/90419266/this-game-can-help-you-divide-household-duties-and-emotional-labor-fairly#:~:text=As%20Rodsky%20began%20to%20mull,provider%20was%20taking%20its%20toll.
These discussions are intended to let us understand and appreciate these perspectives. Plus, these should be prompts for us to examine our own context.
