What's in this episode:
In this episode also, there are 3 questions I focus on, with both the guests, as relevant. What are the top 3 things they do to manage work and home well as a woman, their top productivity tip and about child care options.
Our guest who is a lecturer in an engineering college, talks about the need to be systematic and well organized. Later we delve into the details of what this means, from a day to day perspective. She talks about the importance of spending time with the family and seeking their support. She also goes into how simple and small steps can make a huge difference in our quality of daily life.
Her top productivity tip is not any specific tool - but about the mind. And how to change your guilt feeling about not spending enough time with the family.
She shares how the demands of the time only increase when the children grow older. She then goes on to talk about the importance of not being in separate worlds!
We discuss the child care options or the lack of them and here she shares the struggles she went through and what worked for her and how she had to adapt continuously to cater to the child care situation.
She talks about the importance of understanding if the workplace environment is hostile, telling us there are lot of opportunities if one is intelligent and competent enough.
She goes on to share more details of the kind of challenges she went through and how she had to take professional help. She says the advice that helped her the most is about the need to accept that one cannot change others.
She stresses the importance of self-care, open communication and the need to adapt and accept things with more maturity. Plus, identifying where one needs help and then asking for the same.
Then, we move on to someone who is working in a senior position in IT with a son in college. To the same questions, her response is about support system, importance of nurturing ourselves and to keep learning always. Her productivity tip is again very different and it is all around the awareness of what works best for oneself.
On child care, she shares how it is important to work towards building a support system. I cannot agree more when she says, it will not come and sit in your life.
It was interesting to also hear about their take on the guilty feeling that moms who are pursuing careers often go through.
These discussions are intended to let us understand and appreciate these perspectives. Plus, these should be prompts for us to examine our own challenges.

What's in this episode:
There are 3 questions I focus on, in this episode, with all the 3 guests, as relevant. What are the top 3 things they do to manage work and home well as a woman, their top productivity tip and about child care options.
Ramya talks about how we try to create this perfect wife or daughter in law image which is not sustainable and then she talks about what is the most effective way to do the balancing. And she indeed has a very different productivity tip.
Then we meet someone who has a toddler and the challenges only increase and are of a different order. She talks about her priority of spending quality time with her toddler and that influencing everything in her day. We see her stretching her hours to make sure she is able to get time with her toddler. Her top productivity tip is also influenced by this perspective. And then, we focus on child care options available and the challenges around that and how money doesn’t seem to help matters. There is some wishful thinking also here. We also talk about her expectation from other members of the family. I wonder what would that be for you ?
We proceed with the same questions with someone who has slightly older children, of early school going age. She shares about her journey and how she had to decide to switch off from work when she spends time with her kids. She shares her reflection on how she and her husband had to become aware of, discuss and let go of something that was affecting them a lot. She also shares her productivity tip and what she struggles with. The child care option that she engaged in and the challenges therein are also interesting to note.
These discussions are intended to let us understand and appreciate these perspectives. Plus, these should be prompts for us to examine our own challenges.

What the New Indian Woman podcast is about
As you may already be aware, this podcast has 2 focus areas. One, We examine the challenges faced by today's Indian woman and proposes ACTIONABLE strategies in the Indian context, on a wide variety of topics - right from identifying their passion to better productivity and parenting. Second, We meet women who chose to aspire or have a dream beyond their defined roles and facilitates sharing of what worked and what didn’t, for them. Today's episode falls in the second category.
And in the process, my aim is to help you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.
What's in this episode:
Poonam starts off with an introduction and a declaration -"we have done what we wanted to do". She is referring to making home composting a household term in India!
Her foray into the world of design has always been with a lot of intention - trying to relate to the larger world we live in. She talks about how she single handedly went around the city talking in all kinds of forums about composting - and this was more than 20 years back!
She talks about trying to go by intuition and looking at patterns of how society works and the need to insert a lever in a strategic place, to create an impact.
She goes on talk about the importance of aesthetics in the design and how the design is different when done by a woman.
We talk about how she brought the waste bin to the balcony and made it look beautiful, while focussing on composting. And then she says something very powerful - the need for subtle/understated elements and how this is not perceived as a threat.
She moves on to talk about a different kind of freedom when one starts something new after 40. She also explains how this product influenced the lives of potters, about being open about the design and then she asks us to examine waste from a very different perspective.
Poonam explains the concept behind sending only 10% waste outside the house and how this can influence the health of the family. At the same time, she highlights the need for newer community based models what will facilitate more free time for women without impacting health of the family.
She explains how one can never know everything and hence it is important to start!
Poonam shares how important it is for us to adapt to our scenarios and figure out what we can do, despite our own challenges. We go on to talk about the importance of choosing not to fight some battles and here she shares some tips that will definitely help all of us and a very important message for us.

What's in this episode:
Uma talks about an interesting learning experience that she had right at the start of her career. It was something so bad that it affected her a great deal. But she chose to learn from it and acknowledge it, to the extent that even in this podcast she starts off by talking about it.
She talks about the challenges of singlehandedly managing the house and her young kid and that too in the days before Internet and mobile and her decision to take up Voluntary retirement at the age of 29.
The following period is about adjusting to the role of stay at home mom, without being able to handle the expectations typical of women in Indian households. She talks about how this affected her. This particular part will be relatable to most of the listeners. But then, she talks about how she decided to approach it and what she did about it. We discuss this thru the day to day scenarios that we all face, knowing the intention but still facing challenges at the same time.
She talks about the trappings of being indispensable at home, choosing to add more and more things and the tendency to keep busy.
Then she goes on to talk about her decision to join the workforce again and how she faced rejections one after the other, with people not even ready to interview her!
And then, this particular bank, the experience made her brush aside her inhibitions to call up her old friend to find out the reasons for rejection. And then, she talks about the interview and then her choice to negotiate for a better role.
We will continue her journey in the next episode.

Reimagining Festivals - Episode 36
Saturday Feb 27, 2021
Saturday Feb 27, 2021
Welcome to a chat on looking at festivals, the need to reimagine and adapt them to today's context. I invite you to this chat with my friend Srividya where we explore our memories of festivals, what they mean to us and how we can play a role in creating memories for our children and enjoy it differently.
Does this mean we stop celebrating our traditional festivals ? Definitely not. Don’t we have enough festivals to start thinking about new ones ? Do they sometimes feel as a burden for the busy Indian woman ? Do they sometimes feel just a ritual, having lost their meaning ? How to make sure festivals help us find the laughter, fun, love, sharing and gratitude in today's context ?
If these are the questions in your mind, you would love this chitchat. You may get some ideas to try out with your family. And of course, we are waiting to hear your ideas on this topic.
Listen on ..

What's in this episode:
My friend Srividya and me relive an earlier chat we had on this topic of festivals. We start with the intent of festivals and what comes to our mind. We look at whether it means the same for our children.
What about the smaller festivals for which we may not know the meaning ? We then discuss the feedback from children on festivals - these sure are pointers for you to have such a discussion at home.
We explore the concept of picking up a new "festival" or "special day" to try out or reimagine. We discuss examples of trying this out instead of the routine shopping as per the various festival sales or eating out. Or, doing these itself in a different way.
We then move on gifting, connecting across generations and even playing games as a family. And of course, exploring interesting outings. Plus, we look at doing something over a long period of time, questioning festival as an event associated with a day or a few days.
Then, we get into the practical ways of going about it, if you want to start trying this.
We examine the scope for reimagining along with our traditions as well!
And of course, we would like to hear from you on what you have tried out or your ideas. Head over to our facebook page or twitter handle to share your ideas and experiences! Together we can arrive at a wonderful list of "Ideas for Reimagining festivals".
